Arte, Manualidades y Niños / Arts, Crafts and Kids

ENGLISH VERSION BELOW

Growing up I was surrounded by art, in all forms, literature, music, dance, painting, etc. I truly believe art helps us appreciate real beauty and opens our minds to learn new things. I want my kids to be surrounded by art.

So far my kids, like all kids I know, love arts and crafts, and my husband and I try to encouraged them to express their feelings through painting or drawing or even dancing. So every time my son asks for a new piece of paper, I give it to him. He loves to draw and he is very interested in drawing mazes at this stage of his life. A few weeks ago I was in a meeting were the topic was art and kids and I learned a lot, the most important thing I learned is that "teaching" art doesn't need to be complicated. There are thousands of opportunities during the day when we can introduce the arts to our children.

So last week I tried something new that I would like to share. Usually when my son has a birthday party to go to, I have to hold the information about it until almost the last minute because he gets so excited about seeing his friends and playing that he can barely contain himself. From pretty much the morning of the party until it is time to go, he is in a crazy mood, jumping, running, and asking every ten minutes when we are leaving. So this time, using what I learned at the meeting and not thinking much about it, I got the present and brought scrap paper, scissors, crayons, stickers, markers, etc. I put the gift in a box, wrapped it in white paper, and gave it to my son to decorate. It was the best time, my youngest son was taking a nap, and my husband was at his office, so my son and I had plenty of time to enjoy ourselves.

It was a great activity, he worked the whole time on his project, he didn't even notice that by the time it was finished, it was almost time to go to the party. He started making the card, which was the inspiration for the whole design. The card looked like a window, so after he was finished with it, he decided to make the whole house on the wrapped gift box, so the card is the front window and in the back of the box he painted the back yard. And because the gift was for a girl friend he decided that butterflies, kites, hearts, and trees were in order :) He was so happy about his creation. He carried it so carefully all the way to the party. From now on I think this will be a tradition in our house, making our birthday presents pieces of art.

What do you do to introduce arts to your kids? Do you have any tips or activities you would like to share with us?

In case you are wondering what that black spot next to the kite is, it's the wind!
