Dinosaurios/Dinosaurs

How adorable preschoolers are!! Everything is play and investigation. Yet, when my son wakes up with a list of questions up his sleeve, ay,ay,ay, I need all the patience in the world! And how about those questions I'm not sure how deeply to answer. One day my son and I were talking about dinosaurs, the conversation went like this:
Son: mama, do people feed dinosaurs?
Me: no sweetie, people and dinosaurs cannot live together. Dinosaurs would eat them. (notice the fast answer, without thinking)
Son: then, where do they live?
Me: (without thinking, again!) nowhere honey, they are extinct.
Son: extinct? What’s extinct?
Me: (great! how can I explain extinction to a preschooler without talking about death?) well, dinosaurs lived many years ago, in a time where bla, bla, bla…. Then they grew old, closed their eyes and went to a special place in heaven (Ay, now my son will be afraid to close his eyes, I thought. Fortunately he had bigger worries)
Son: NOOOOOOO! Mama, dinosaurs are gonna eat baby Jesus!!!

It’s fascinating to watch children playing with sand; they make castles, shapes, they pour it on dump trucks, they feel it with their hands. When I got our sandbox I never thought we would use it so much. Now I do not know what I would do without it!! On my son’s second birthday it was the most popular attraction. Our sandbox is empty right now, but not for long. We will be getting it ready for Summer. In case you do not have one and you would like to get one, Sam's Club has a great deal; the Step 2 sand and water activity center with umbrella for just $52.54 (orig $79.99), shipping included!!

Today's children
This morning my 16 month old awakened, I brought him to our bed and gave him his milk. When he finished, he crawled down off the bed, walked toward the remote control, and turned the TV on! Around 10:30 my older son was watching one of his favorite cartoons, of course the baby wanted to play with him, so with the brightest smile on his face he went straight to the TV and with his perfect little finger he turned it off! But that’s not all, around 3:00 pm I was checking my emails when he came to me with his arms wide open, so I picked him up and he went right after the mouse and started clicking away. Before his bed time he came to me again when he saw me getting ready with his bottle. I picked him up and he pointed to the microwave, I walked towards it and he opened the door, after I put the milk in, he closed it, then he pushed the start button!!! He is just 16 months old for crying out loud! What’s with this new generation? I still struggle to record a video and my sons seem to be born with special chips in their brains to tell them what to do. Should I feel worried or relieved that they embrace modern life with such ease?

Bilingualism anyone?
When I was a child I loved to dance and I wanted to go to dance classes. My mom had other plans, however. She put me in English classes instead and I didn’t like it much. At one point in my life I had decided I would never speak English! Yeah right! Well things changed and I ended up marrying a “gringo”, moving to the USA, and writing a bilingual blog, go figure! Now I thank my mom because those classes were a great head start for learning English as an adult, I wish I had learned more when I was a child though. Now, here I am taking a daily decision since the births of my sons to speak to them in Spanish, read to them in Spanish, and watch cartoons with them in Spanish. It is my deepest wish for them to speak perfect English and perfect Spanish. I want for them the best of both worlds. Sometimes it is frustrating, sometimes I forget words in my first language, sometimes I go back and forth between languages without even realizing it! Sometimes I feel English is so dominant in their world that they will never speak perfect Spanish… then my son will use a new Spanish word or will understand every word I say in Spanish, and I relax, feel proud, and happy.
All this came about because I was watching this morning a video from ABC News with Dr Jamie Wells who was talking about bilingualism, some new studies about bilingual children, and how families who are not bilingual can be with some work, if they would like to be. Here is the link.
Tell me… what do you think about raising children in a bilingual household? Do you have any tips or experiences about bilingualism you would like to share? Send me an email or publish a comment at the end of this post. I would like to know what you think.
